Behind the Scenes with Joshua Pearlstein

Portrait session

Behind the Scenes

Every person who walks into the studio brings a different energy with them. Some sessions feel quiet and reflective, others feel playful and spontaneous. When Joshua Pearlstein arrived for his portrait session, he brought the kind of presence that naturally fills a room - thoughtful, creative, and deeply connected to his music.

Joshua is a singer and a student at Berklee College of Music, and he came into the studio wanting portraits that reflected both who he is and the artist he is becoming.

A Session About Expression

Working with artists is always special. Musicians, in particular, carry a certain sensitivity and awareness of emotion that often translates beautifully in front of the camera.

With Joshua, the focus was on keeping things simple and letting his presence lead the session. We played with light, shadow, and subtle shifts in expression to create images that felt honest and grounded.

There’s something powerful about the moment when someone stops trying to “pose” and simply allows themselves to be seen. That’s when the most meaningful portraits begin to appear.

The Energy in the Room

One of my favorite parts of photographing creatives is the atmosphere they bring into the studio. It becomes less about the camera and more about the conversation, the music, the pauses between frames.

Joshua moved through the session with a quiet confidence. Some of the strongest images came from those in-between moments - when he was simply present, thinking, or listening.

Those are often the moments that tell the most authentic story.

The Final Portraits

The final portraits from Joshua Pearlstein’s session feel both intimate and strong - a reflection of an artist who is still evolving, exploring, and finding his voice.

Photographing musicians at this stage of their journey always feels meaningful. These images become part of a moment in time - a visual record of who they were while they were building something bigger.
